Local indie grunge quartet Reflekter brought foot-tapping solos aplenty to the intimate stage of The Bodega as they showed off their new single earlier this month…
A sold-out crowd welcomed indie-grunge band Reflekter onto the Bodega stage last Friday night after a day of signings and performances across Nottingham’s intimate venues. Supported by young indie-pop group Marvin’s Revenge, fresh from the release of two new tunes: Liwii and Anything, the gig quickly gains momentum. Impressive vocals and a heavy drum-backing from the opening three piece lay excellent ground for the main event.
By 9 o’clock the room is full, and Reflekter take the stage. A slow start to the first track quickly gives way to a band eager to get the crowd moving with an upbeat selection of grunge pop tracks. The Bodega’s small stage fits perfectly with the intimate tracks this group specialise in. James Gooch’s vocals head up the operation, adding a grungey growl to the top of upbeat foot-tapping instrumentals. Standout track Machine is an example of what Reflekter do best: a song with a high tempo tone, heavy on the vocals and guitar – and it quickly gets the crowd up and moving.
The show moves through its paces quickly, none of the band stopping for breath or to waste time to talk to the expectant audience. Instead, they opt to keep pushing through their collection, stepping on the gas of their upbeat indie-grunge productions. The time then comes to kick off a live rendition of their newly released track 75 Trips, a tune that the audience eagerly sing along with, honing in on catchy lyrics backed by ever present buoyant instrumentals from lead guitarist Adam Mitchell, Isaac Bloomfield on bass and Seb McNish behind the drums.
This Nottingham band set out to emulate the likes of Fontaines D.C., offering up the same genre of quirky indie-rock. It’s clear from this gig their efforts are well received by fans of this ever popular style of music. As the gig draws to a close, the bells and whistles of their electric guitars and heavy drumbeats are replaced with a lone acoustic guitar. The hyped up crowd are not silenced completely, but it’s certainly a good change of pace to finish off what is a top notch night of grunge tunes and foot-tapping solos.
