Crimbo is close, which means it’s time to get giving, and if you’re looking for a worthy cause in need of pennies we’ve got it covered. Midlands Women’s Aid, a refuge service in Notts, is looking to raise £840 to buy presents for forty children (budgeting £20 per child) and they need our help. They’ve only got till Sunday 10 December to hit their target…

So what do Midlands Women’s Aid do? The refuge has been working for over forty years to deliver services to women and children experiencing domestic abuse. Each year around 1.4 million women – that’s a shocking 8.5% of the population – suffer from some form of domestic abuse, and 130,000 children live in homes with high-risk domestic abuse. Now according to Catherine Saunders, CEO at Midlands Women’s Aid, “Christmas is the time of year where the rate of abuse in the household increases and children are more likely to witness the abuse or become a victim themselves”, and though Catherine is proper grateful to everyone who supports the refuge throughout the year, the festive season is an especially important time.

The crowdfunding campaign they’re running is all thanks to Gemma from Arnold, who’s been working with the organisation for the last three years. After learning about the inspiring and life-changing work they do, Gemma decided that she’d dedicate her spare time during the winter months to help in delivering a memorable Christmas for the children at the refuge. According to Gemma, “people often remember children who are struggling at Christmas with health issues, however we tend to forget that there are children living in poverty, refuges and shelters.” And, importantly, Gemma also states that “like all great acts of kindness and generosity, you can’t do them alone and I really need the people of Nottingham and the Midlands to get behind this crowdfunding appeal.”

If Midlands Women’s Aid exceed their £840 target, they'll be able to throw a party as well as help more women to escape abuse this winter. So let’s help them smash their target.
